Powerful Cancer Causing Agent

TCP is a chemical that is found in drinking water sources around the country and has been called, by some, “one of the most powerful cancer-causing agents in the world.”  Not only is it unsafe to drink, but it is unsafe to shower in as one can inhale the chemical.  In parts of California, TCP levels are 6 times higher than what the state considers to be safe.

TCP is short for 1,2,3-trichloropropane. Originally discovered as an unwanted by-product in the manufacturing of other chemicals, especially pesticides, TCP has been on a short list of studies by the EPA for several years.  However, water municipalities are still not required to test for it or remove it.  Only some states, such as California, are moving to regulate this toxic chemical.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has not yet set a Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for this very toxic manmade chemical used as a cleaning and degreasing solvent and also as a pesticide.  Ironically, it did not even work as a pesticide and now millions of people are left with the legacy of TCP in their drinking water.

California and TCP

Specifically, there are lawsuits pending in California against DOW chemical and Shell.  While they knew that it was not effective as a pesticide, they realized that it was a cost effective way to get rid of the byproduct.  According to sources, they made nearly $10 million dollars a year between sales and the savings of having to dispose of the waste.  A DOW scientist even referred to it as “garbage”.

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment has developed a Public Health Goal (PHG) for TCP of 0.0007 ug/L or 0.7 parts per trillion (PPT). At this level, the threat of consuming TCP over a life time of 70 years is considered to be insigniicant.  The maximum contaminant level (MCL) currently proposed by the California State Water Board is 5 ppt.  Confirmation is expected soon.

To help visualize the impact of the 5 ppt level, picture the following:  1 part-per-trillion is about 1,000 times smaller than a drop of water in an Olympic-size swimming pool!  Paul Tratnyek, a professor at the Institute of Environmental Health at Oregon Health and Science University, who studied TCP for the Defense Department said, “Even the slightest amount of TCP in the water would be considered to be a potential health effect.”

Is Drinking Distilled Water Safe?

Myths About Distilled Water

There are many myths floating around about the safety of drinking distilled water.  Some believe it is too acidic and others think it is devoid of useful minerals.  Some think distilled water doesn’t taste good, while others think the only use of distilled water is to keep the iron from getting clogged with minerals deposits.  Our distilled water is 99.9% pure.  Nearly all of the toxins, biological contaminants and chemical contaminants are removed during the distillation process.  It is the simplicity of distillation, mimicking the hydrologic cycle, that makes is so effective.  Regarding minerals, our bodies rely on fresh fruits and vegetables for mineral requirements.  Minerals in water are poorly absorbed as they are inorganic and the body must work to eliminate the majority of them.

Distilled Water pH is around 7.0 – Neutral

With rare exception, freshly distilled water has a pH very near neutral, which is 7.0 on the pH scale.  Solutions with a pH below 7.0 are considered to be acids and solutions with a pH above 7.0 are considered to be bases or alkaline.  Claims made online or anywhere else, that distilled water is very acidic are simply not true. This can be easily proven using pH test paper or a pH meter. It is true that when distilled water has been sitting around in an open container for a long period of time, that it will absorb some of the carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. This forms a very weak carbonic acid and will drop the pH slightly below its normal reading.

Distilled Water is Not Acidic

Claims made online about distilled water being acidic or acidic water causing cancers are not based on scientific facts.  The idea that drinking alkaline water will somehow get rid of cancer is untrue.  It is much more likely that distilling tap water will remove carcinogenic compounds from the water.  Your body does an excellent job of managing itself and the pH of all parts of the body.  The various organs of a healthy body do an excellent job of managing the pH of all parts of the body.  By drinking clean, toxin free, distilled water, you are providing your body with the best water possible.

Water Distillation in Times of Disaster

Recently, a friend of mine invited me over to see his brand new video game, Fallout 4, the highly anticipated next chapter in the Fallout saga. For those of you who may not know, Fallout is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where you, as the main player, have survived a nuclear apocalypse by living in a large underground vault. As you emerge from the vault, and make your way across the wastelands, water distillers become extremely important to your survival. In the game, you distill water for both drinking and as a means of making money. Since I am an advocate of drinking distilled water, my friend wanted me to see how important it is in the game.

While Fallout 4 is only a game based on survival, we face similar challenges in the real world. Our water quality is being threatened by biological, chemical and other types of contamination. Some of this contamination is manmade, but other kinds are a result of natural disasters or natural processes. For example, when severe weather strikes, sewer mains can break or overflow causing your home’s water to become undrinkable. Infrastructure can be disabled. What do you do if you can’t drink water from your faucet? Do you go to the grocery store to get bottled water, only to find that the shelves are empty? Do you try using a pitcher with a simple carbon filter only to find out that it can’t remove dangerous toxins?

By owning a water distiller, you can rest assured that your distilled drinking water is safe. You will have peace of mind knowing that you can distill your tap water into the safest, purest water possible for you and your family. By making your own distilled water, you are able to take care of yourself and perhaps even some of your neighbors. This is good for you and your community. What is the Difference between Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Distilled Water?

Reverse osmosis and filter water pitchers appear to be quite popular these days as methods to get cleaner water. People clearly want better quality water, but may not understand that different methods generate different results. All water filtration methods are not equal.

There are many ways to improve water quality. One popular method is to use a pitcher with a filter. These filters are carbon based and can remove some chemicals, particularly organic chemicals. This improves the smell and taste of the water for many consumers, but there still may be a variety of contaminants left behind in their drinking water.

Another method of filtration involves reverse osmosis. RO, as it is often called, uses high pressure to force water through a semi permeable membrane. It will remove some dissolved salts, organics, bacteria and pyrogens. Reverse Osmosis involves cross filtration rather than standard filtration. In standard filtration, the contaminants are trapped in the filter media, while in cross filtration contaminants are swept away to avoid build up and to keep the membrane clean. RO is fairly good at removing dissolved salts when the membrane is new, but cannot be relied upon to remove bacteria or viruses, especially when the water has no residual chlorine present. As RO membranes age, the pores in the membranes become larger and allow more and more impurities of all kinds to pass through into the treated water.

By far, the most effective water purification method is distillation. Distillation mimics the hydrologic cycle in that, water evaporates through boiling leaving contaminants behind, then condenses similar to how clouds form, and then the water collects in a jar or tank in the way that rain falls. Water that collects after distillation is 99.9% pure. No other filtration or purification system can compare. No other system can improve upon the natural processes that govern the hydrologic cycle, which has supported life on Earth for billions of years.

As global warming begins to affect weather more and more, water quality is becoming more of an issue. With an increase in natural disasters striking around the world, how do we protect our water? Last year alone, thousands of boil alerts went out. Having a distiller provides the highest quality water; better than simply boiling where toxins can build up. During a boil alert, those with RO or pitchers would still need to boil their water.

During chemical spills, water filters or RO will not be able to remove contaminants completely. Boiling water concentrates contaminants. Often times, distilled water would be safe to drink. Additionally, many spills are found after people have already been exposed. Drinking distilled water is the only way to truly protect oneself from unknowns in the water supply, whether they be chemical or biological for that matter.

Bottled water, while generally safe, although not pure, is always a go to solution for disasters of any kind. However, it may be difficult to go to get bottled water during a time of such high demand. In normal times, using bottled water on a regular basis creates trash in landfills at an epic rate. Did you know that it is believed that over 60 million plastic bottles are thrown away each day? 80% of all plastic bottles are not even recycled. Besides all of this, bottled water can cost up to 1000 times more than tap water!

Many who live in rural areas know the struggle of clean water. Arsenic, nitrates and other chemicals have been found in amounts that are simply unsafe to drink, especially long term. Well water increasingly needs to be purified to drink. City dwellers are faced with similar threats. Each city is faced with the need to provide large quantities of water for the lowest cost. While the water is considered “safe” by the government, there are still contaminants present. The reality is that distillation is the only proven method to remove these contaminants at a lower cost with better results and without waste. What more could you ask for?

Water Quality in a Drought

The Great California Drought: It’s been all over the news lately that California is getting into more and more trouble with the continuing drought and dwindling water supply. Not enough people are conserving it, crops need it and enforcing conservation is extremely difficult. While everyone is concerned about the amount of water being used, few people think about the quality of water being used.
During a drought, water levels are low because much of the water has been evaporated and not replenished. The water that is available will be more concentrated with contaminants. During these times, we can expect to see an increase in nitrates, organic and inorganic minerals, bacteria, pesticides and herbicides in the remaining water supply.
water treatment picIn addition, California’s municipal water treatment facilities will be pressed to treat and recycle the remaining available drinking water supply at a faster rate, which will adversely affect the quality of water. Many municipal water supplies will add additional chlorinate to the water to kill bacteria. This means it is very likely that Californians will be getting more chlorine in tap water then they are accustomed to.
What does this mean for the water conscious home consumer? Bottled water is an option. However, the consumer should be made aware that bottled water, if treated or filtered at all, is often of variable quality and will likely be of lesser quality in a drought when the available water inputs are of lesser quality. In addition, the process of bottling and filtering water is extremely wasteful for our resources and the environment. Finally, the cost of bottled water can quickly add up.

Home treatment systems known as ‘point of use’ POU systems for drinking water purification are a common option. These include barrier treatment methods such as ‘RO’ reverse osmosis, filtration and distillation. As with bottled water, RO systems are very inefficient and waste water. Also, with the increase in contamination, filters are not only going to deteriorate faster and need to be replaced more often, but their initial effectiveness will be lower. This can become especially expensive for RO systems which require regular replacement filters.
A sensible alternative are distillation POU systems. Distillation systems offer a high quality, eco-friendly and cost-conscious option.
